Pool Paving and Pool Coping in Durban: Surrounds, Coping and Sealing
Pool paving is the hard surround around a swimming pool, laid at a 1 percent fall away from the water, and pool coping is the edge course that caps the pool wall. The eThekwini Stormwater Management By-law, 2020 counts a pool surround as a hardened area in section 1, so its runoff is the owner's to manage like a driveway's.

Pool Paving Specifications
| Attribute | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fall away from the pool | 1% (10 mm per metre) | Paving manufacturer's pool-paving guidance |
| Compaction layers around a new pool | No more than 150 mm each | Paving manufacturer's pool-paving guidance |
| Paver thickness, foot traffic | 50 mm | Western Cape paving guide (Jul 2026) |
| Trip hazard threshold | More than 15 mm level difference | Paving manufacturer's maintenance guide |
| Resealing around salt-chlorinated pools | Every 6 months (cheap sealant) or 24 months (quality urethane or plastic-based) | Paving manufacturer's pool-paving guidance |
| Installed price, pool surround | R450–R900 per m² | Western Cape paving guide (Jul 2026) |
On those figures, a 4 m run of surround falls 40 mm from coping to garden edge. Durban rates by guide sit on the paving prices in Durban page.
Pool Paving Cost by Pool Size
| Pool | Coping run | 1 m surround | Surround at R450–R900/m² (guide F, Western Cape) | Clay brick at R350–R600/m² (Durban guide A) | One seal at R50–R100/m² (Durban guide B) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 m × 3 m | 18 m | 22 m² | R9,900–R19,800 | R7,700–R13,200 | R1,100–R2,200 |
| 8 m × 4 m | 24 m | 28 m² | R12,600–R25,200 | R9,800–R16,800 | R1,400–R2,800 |
| 10 m × 5 m | 30 m | 34 m² | R15,300–R30,600 | R11,900–R20,400 | R1,700–R3,400 |
Surround area = (pool length + 2 m) × (pool width + 2 m) − pool area. Each price cell is the guide's per-m² rate multiplied by that area. Guide A's rate is its general clay brick paving rate, not a pool-specific figure.
Around a salt-chlorinated 8 m × 4 m pool, the pool guidance's 6-month cycle means 2 seals a year, or R2,800–R5,600 a year at guide B's sealant rate; the 24-month cycle averages R700–R1,400 a year.
Algae, Grip and Sealing Around the Water
Pool surrounds take splash water every day, and wet paving is where algae starts. A paving manufacturer's maintenance guide records three points:
- Algae forms in damp areas and grows in or around the paving joints, as a thin green film.
- Slip hazards come from algae, moss, oil or polishing.
- Sealing the paving after the algae is treated dramatically reduces recurrence.
A Durban installer's guide adds that concrete and natural stone in coastal zones require sealing. The paving manufacturer's pool guidance says water from salt-chlorinated pools damages paving, so surrounds of salt pools are sealed on a fixed cycle.
Pool Coping and Pool Coping Tiles Compared
| Coping | Edge profile | Material | Typical pairing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Precast bullnose coping | Rounded | Cast concrete | Concrete or cobble surrounds |
| Pool coping tiles | Square or bullnose tile on a mortar bed | Porcelain or ceramic | Tiled or large-format surrounds |
| Natural stone coping | Cut or rock-face | Sandstone, slate or granite | Stone or slasto surrounds |
| Brick-on-edge coping | Square | Clay brick | Clay brick paving |
| Corner coping units | Pre-formed corner | Cast concrete | Any coping run; no mitre cuts at corners |
| Contrasting coping | Rounded or square | A second colour or material | Frames the water against a plain surround |
The paving manufacturer's pool guidance names rounded copings as the practical choice over the sharp edges and lugs of ordinary pavers. Coping is fixed to the pool shell, while the surround sits on its own compacted base.
Pool Paving Layouts
- Coping only: a single coping ring with lawn or planting right up to it.
- Cobble surround: classic or mixed-size cobbles in a random or fan layout.
- Planks and slabs: long concrete planks or large slabs with grass strips between them.
- Herringbone or checkerboard: block patterns carried from the driveway or patio to the pool.
- Stone border: a band of natural stone between coping and field paving.
Patterns and materials are compared under paving designs.
Grouting and Joints on Pool Surrounds
The paving manufacturer's pool guidance records that sand grouting washes out easily on a pool surround and that cement grouting tends to pop out of paving around pools; it recommends an imported paving grout for these areas. Its guidance calls expansion joints popular with some installers but quick to turn unsightly.
Pool Surrounds and eThekwini Water Rules
- Hardened area. Section 1 of the eThekwini Stormwater Management By-law, 2020 names pool surrounds in its definition of a hardened area, and section 7(1) makes the owner provide suitable means for the control and disposal of accumulated stormwater.
- Pool water. Section 5(1)(k) bars discharging water from a swimming pool into the stormwater system, except where required to lead away excess rainwater during an extreme storm, unless the Municipality consents in writing. Where coping work needs the water level lowered, that water is not pumped into the street drain without that consent.
- Refilling. Section 114(1)(b) of the eThekwini Water By-law, 2023 requires the Municipality's prior consent to fill a swimming pool with water from a source other than the water supply system, such as a borehole.
- Penalty. Section 12 of the stormwater by-law sets a fine of up to R100,000, imprisonment of up to 5 years, or both.
Repairing and Re-Laying Pool Paving
The paving manufacturer's maintenance guide lists repeated settlement or rocking slabs as signs of a sub-base problem, and water getting in through the joints as an item to inspect. A repair lifts the sunken area, finds where the water is getting in, rebuilds the base in compacted layers of no more than 150 mm and re-lays the same pavers where they are sound. Hollow or loose coping is lifted and re-bedded. A surround that has gone green or dull is cleaned and sealed as set out under paving cleaning, and full-property paving is covered under paving in Durban.
Paving Wiz Durban: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between pool paving and pool coping?
Pool coping is the edge course that caps the pool wall and overhangs the water. Pool paving is the surround beyond the coping, laid on its own base and falling away from the pool.
Which way should pool paving slope?
Away from the pool, at 1 percent, in a paving manufacturer's pool-paving guidance. A 1 percent fall drops 10 mm over each metre of surround.
Can pool water be drained into the street in Durban?
No, not without the Municipality's written consent. Section 5(1)(k) of the eThekwini Stormwater Management By-law, 2020 bars discharging swimming pool water into the stormwater system, except where required to lead away excess rainwater during an extreme storm.
Does salt water damage pool paving?
Yes. A paving manufacturer's pool-paving guidance says water from salt-chlorinated pools damages paving, and calls for sealing the paving around those pools: every 6 months with a cheap sealant, or every 24 months with a quality urethane or plastic-based sealant.
Why is my pool paving turning green?
Algae is growing on it. A paving manufacturer's maintenance guide notes that algae forms in damp areas, in or around the joints, and that sealing paving after treatment dramatically reduces recurrence.
How much does pool paving cost?
A pool surround in non-slip pavers costs R450 to R900 per m² in a Western Cape guide (July 2026), so a 30 m² surround works out at R13,500 to R27,000. Durban paving rates by guide sit on the paving prices in Durban page.
Can new coping go on an old pool?
Yes. The old coping is lifted, the top of the pool wall is checked and repaired, and the new coping is bedded and jointed. Loose or hollow coping is usually replaced in the same job.
